Floodline Houses

– Parkhurst –

6 Houses designed for an inner suburban site which lies along a canalized river, below the 100 year floodline. Houses are on legs, with hinged decks able to raise and lower with water levels. Decks are ‘landscape elements’ with stepped ledges and terraces. Houses bend and wave in relation to eachother in an attempt to dematerialize slightly, creating a myriad of outdoor experiences in this dappled shadow landscape of trees and the threat of water. prefabricated and craned into position in this suburban Johannesburg street. The glass links not only break the limits of tight container space, they provide light injections between zones which extend and complicate spatial experience. As is often the case with my buildings, the exterior is experiences as a ‘part’ of the interior. The whole hovers over a new garage and workshop space, makes a completely new entrance to the main house, and lives up over the street in the trees.
