Togu’na

– Parktown North, Johannesburg –

Lara bought a large panhandle off Jan Smuts Avenue in early 2007, and when I came to see her one day, she and her husband were busy trying to knock some sense into a previously squatted, extremely derelict and badly built thatched house. As I saw it, this building was going to do her beautiful African art stock no favours. In the course of that afternoon, we decided to build two cheap and elegant steel-framed factory-type buildings on the site, and I decided almost immediately to clad them in a translucent multi-walled polycarbonate a material I had been aiming to use for a while. We also decided immediately that these sheds would face each other across a garden courtyard, and be lined across their facades with large tilt-up garage doors to take full advantage of the garden, the light and sky views, and the beautiful Johannesburg climate when open, they would provide a shaded verandah.
